Stephen Fry Impressed With Nokia N97

Nokia N97Recently unveiled at an event in London, the Nokia N97 is a combination of high-end phone and mini touchscreen computer with impressive music, video and web capabilities. Like its main rival, the Apple iPhone, the N97 supports the running of a range of third party applications and Nokia have aimed for full integration with social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The showcase drew out the likes of veteran comedian and brainbox Stephen Fry, who was eager to get a look at the new phone being dubbed ‘the iPhone killer’.

The N97 is the first of many Nokia phones to be connected to the Ovi Store, Nokia’s equivalent of the iPhone’s App Store. The Ovi Store will allow users to download free and paid applications from over 20,000 available. Third party developers are able to publish on the Ovi Store after their applications have been approved by Nokia.

In addition to third party applications, the Ovi Store will offer users access to games, music, podcasts and a whole range of other services. The N97’s impressive 32GB storage (expandable to 48GB) and high speed connectivity means users can directly download thousands of songs from Nokia’s online music store.

The N97 stems from Nokia’s recognition that only 10% of people use their phones for basic calls and messaging. The N97 is aimed at the 90% of the market who desire sophisticated web browsing, emails and social networking with their phone.

A Nokia spokesman was stated as saying, “The N97 extends the Nokia brand products connecting people by increased use of the internet. It marks a shift into a new era of mobile internet.”
