After creating a new category of affordable social networking mobile phones, INQ, a new company emerging from Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., is rolling out a couple of new mobile phones to succeed its highly successful and multi-awarded INQ1. One of them, the INQ Mini 3G have just been released with the latter positioned as a budget phone that carries the same social networking, instant messaging and email as the main focus as its bigger QWERTY brother, the INQ Chat 3G. Both are expected to be out in the market by the end of August.
Looking like any conventional candybar mobile phone, the INQ Mini 3G is not only light on the wallet, but its slim design at103 x 46 x 13mm also makes it light on the pocket. INQ tones down on the hardware side to make it a “mini” version of the heftier and more muscled QWERTY phone, the INQ Chat 3G that’s goes with the launch. What makes it interesting is its feature/price ratio that makes an affordable INQ social networking handset even more affordable.
Getting the Essentials Right
This phone is designed around messaging and social networking over the internet. Not imaging or media playback. Because the focus has been well-defined, INQ stripped the Mini 3G to the bare essentials to you get great value for what it’s positioned at. Rather than talk about you get, here’s what you don’t get:
- Forget about a generous onboard memory. It’s quite minimal at 100 MB. That’s a great cost reduction item to start with. But not to worry, there’s a microSD slot you use for up to 16 GB of memory.
- There’s no GPS. You don’t need one when messaging on the net.
- Nothing more than a 2-megapixel camera puts this feature as a mere accommodation to the faddish imaging phones out there. Not bad for taking instant snaps when you need one to send over the net. You don’t need all that resolution.
- You can’t play Windows Media files right off the bat. You can just convert them to MP3 files.
So there. If you need a great imaging and multimedia phone, look elsewhere. The INQ Mini 3G is a social mobile phone that gets the job done affordably.
