XPERIA X10 Getting a 2.1 Update Too Late
While it may seem like good news, there is no denying that the updates for Sony Ericsson’s Android smart phones are arriving a little too late to make owners happy.
Take the case of the Android smart phone, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10. This mobile handset was first announced last year and was considered to be the very first, true high end Android smart phone to ever be confirmed. But as the device’s production got delayed and its launched pushed from December 2009 to April of 2010, it longer had the prestige as the original announcement has. By the X10 launched, the most updated version of the Android OS available was version 2.1 Éclair and several handsets were already sporting the 1GHz Snapdragon CPU.
With Android 2.2 Froyo already out for the Google Nexus One, Sony’s line of Android now have to play a desperate game of catch up –a game that they seem to losing badly. Recent reports state that a 2.1 update for the X10 will be available by the third quarter of this year. While that may be a step up from the initial Q4 2010 estimation, the update is still arriving too late.
Other smart phones already use Android 2.1 and many are already waiting for version 2.2. By the time 2.1 arrives for the X10, Google might already be announcing the Android 3.0 (which they hinted at the Google I/O event as coming at the end of the year).
As impressive as Sony Ericsson’s handset may be, they cannot afford to be left behind in terms of software. The XPERIA series has already succeeded in showing off the new Timescape and Mediascape user interfaces, but unless they are also able to provide the new OS, it will not make a difference for smart phone owners.
