Android Retro Gaming: Invadroid Relives Space Invaders

We all know what the Space Invader is; this world famous video game icon is pretty much as popular in looks as the ghosts in the Pac-Man games. The creature is a cute composition of pixels that is supposed to represent a member of a race of interstellar alien species that are going to invade the Earth (or so the early games imply).

This classic title is getting a full featured homage of an app game on the Google Android operating system. Featuring pretty much the same gameplay with some slight adjustments for a smart phone’s user interface and hardware, the Invadroid app is great game to have for any true Space Invader fan.

The graphics are reminiscent of the earlier remakes of Space Invaders for the Nintendo Gameboy Advance, with colors that make the graphics stand out more. The gameplay animation is smooth and simple; once again, the invading aliens from space move menacingly from left and right as they slowly descend the screen.

The four ‘shelter’ boxes of the original Space Invaders titles makes a comeback too, while they prevent the player from shooting, it provides a safe, yet temporary shelter from the projectile salvos.

The point of the game is simple; on both the original and on the Invadroid app, players must guide their ship left and right while firing upwards at the aliens. Each stage is composed of a wave of invaders and wiping out each wave will start the next stage. Players can lose either by getting hit enough times with enemy projectiles, or when the descending aliens reach the bottom of the screen.

If you do not own a Nintendo DS or a Sony Playstation Portable, then this Google Android remake is a pretty good choice for any Space invader fan. However, if you do own a gaming handheld, then the special Space Invaders Extreme is a much better choice.
