3D Graphics and Tower Defense: Star Defense
Tower defense addicts and iPhone owners will be happy to know that ngmoco’s new tower defense game for the Apple handset is already out in the US. While a UK release has yet to be confirmed, this is certainly one game to look forward to.
Users will find themselves defending a small planet, literally. While the basic concept of the game stays the same, the fact that you have to manage a whole planet’s turret defenses means that the later stages will get really challenging.
Of course, the old formula is still there, waves of enemies approach and players must manage the amount of resources available to create new defenses or upgrade old ones. As expected, towers can be upgraded through a tree of technologies. The payoffs are simple, spend more on an upgrade and get a tower that is twice as powerful as the original, or spend on a new tower entirely and have two low end defenses running. Pretty soon players will have the entire planet surface covered with turrets and waves and waves of enemies will be charging in.
The graphics on Star Defense are quite impressive for the iPhone. You can spin the whole planet around, allowing you to appreciate the 3D graphics of the title. The enemy hordes are nicely detailed, and the backgrounds give you an interstellar view of the galaxy. With all the action going on however, it would be hard to pay attention to the smaller details.
The player HUD gives users a quick look at upcoming waves, current resources, tower count and other important references. You can even get up close and personal with enemy details by drawing up the profiles of enemy targets too.
Overall, this game combines the busy world of tower defense with a little bit of 3D graphics for an additional challenge. It is a great combination that makes for a solid game that is sure to take several hours of your time.
