Goodbye Tweetie, Hello Twitter for iPhone

If you have recently visited the Apple App Store in search of Tweetie, then chances are you will not find it. It may take a while before it goes back up and it may not be named “Tweetie” either. Why? Because it may be repackaged and launched as the official Twitter app.

Considering how Apple works, some may think that Tweetie violated one of their “rules”. But, since Tweetie was acquired by the guys over at Twitter, it will probably be reincarnated as the official app. Perhaps with brand new skins or a revamped layout. Who really knows. Tweetie developer, Loren Brichter is keeping mum about the project details.

It is not exactly a surprising move because Twitter for iPhone is already due for release. It may also be that the Twitter team simply wants to ensure that the Apple App Store has the latest version of the app. At the very least this will prevent people from purchasing Tweetie if they plan to change the price for the official Twitter app.

Speaking of free, it is curious what bonuses, if there are any, the paid Tweetie users will get from the new release. It seems quite unfair for those who just recently purchased the Tweetie app if the official release ends up being available at no cost.

There are many theories surrounding the release of the official Twitter app. Will it be released with an iPad version? Will the iPhone and iPad app be a single download (meaning, it will be a universal app). Who really knows at this point, but it seems the release date is near at hand due to the Easter egg announcement that came with the update to Tweetie 2. If anything, the message was loud and clear that Twitter for the iPhone is almost out.
