Dropping the “Series” in Windows Phone 7
Everyone knows that in marketing, a long name just does not cut it, especially if the company wants it to roll off the tongue of their users. No wonder Microsoft is dropping the “Series” from the name “Windows Phone 7 Series”.
After many people have been stumbling over the long product name and several podcasts after, the executives at Microsoft finally got the message and are revising their branding of the operating system. According to the official Windows Phone Twitter, this is what Microsoft had to say about the issue:
“‘Tis the season for Series finales [and] we’ve got one too – dropping the ‘Series’ and keeping the ‘Windows Phone 7.” – Posted at 10:00 AM Apr 2nd via HootSuite
Regardless of what the reason is, this is going to have to suit those looking to call the operating system some sort of shorter nickname. It still sounds like a product name that should have been dropped when the project when public, but this seems like Microsoft’s compromise on the topic.
Hopefully the production of marketing collaterals as well as packaging materials have been held off for now so that this move does not entail a delayed ship of the product. A single character can make the difference in a product’s branding. Just look at Apple’s iPhone 3GS which was previously known as the “Apple iPhone 3G S” which had a rather out of place S placed there that would surely bug obsessive-compulsive people reading the product name.
No other announcements regarding a change in the ship date or a change in the product overall have been announced to supplement the move so far, so it is safe to say that the software is still going to be released on schedule. At least no one has to put up with repeatedly saying “Windows Phone 7 Series” every time the product is mentioned.
